About me
I was born and raised in Cyprus, a tiny yet beautiful Mediterranean island enriched in natural beauty and culture. Growing up on the beach, it was a constant presence, leading me to develop a deep spiritual love, appreciation, and understanding of nature as my ultimate escape and solitude. However, upon moving to London to further my education, I was immediately consumed by unease, as nature was no longer a constant in my life. Instead, I found myself surrounded by the polar opposite – a massive, fast-paced, polluted concrete jungle full of opportunity, vastly different from my standard island life.
Painting and creating have always been passions of mine. During my adolescent years, I exclusively explored beauty and the female form, delving into the differing beauty standards between Western and Eastern cultures and the influences they borrowed from each other. Eventually, I began exploring plastic surgery, taking inspiration from Jonathan Yeo to create my first series. These works were direct references to his, utilizing acrylic, muslin, and gauze on card, which later evolved into photographic series using makeup as a form of transformation, inspired by Cindy Sherman. The female form has always been my ultimate influence, with the raw and unfiltered body ingrained in me from growing up on an island. My work has always been a reflection of my everyday life, particularly in depicting the female nude as a form of empowerment, influenced by Gorilla Girls and "Ways of Seeing".
n the last two years, I've felt the effects of homesickness more than ever as London became less new and exciting, and the reality of my surroundings set in. To maintain my connection to home and my culture, I turned to my art. I began by revisiting pictures depicting my favorite landscapes, people, and places, understanding why they were dear to me. Ocean imagery, motives/situations, and the evil eye symbol emerged as constant themes. I experimented with various mediums including photography, makeup, oil pastel, and watercolor, eventually incorporating collage. Still life snapshots of island life from a young adult's perspective became central, inspired by 1960s French cinema depicting teenage years. This led to the creation of the first piece in my series, using collages backgrounds of prints representing cultural and visual representations of my home, in collaboration with Oil Stick figures on large-scale canvas.
This marked an enlightening moment in my artistic career, as I felt I had truly found my style. It represented not only my home but also my personal experience of it – a loud, maximalistic, and colorful exploration. My studio work continues to focus on this theme and evolve this series. I've recently begun incorporating natural forms from Cyprus, such as shells, and expanding my range of media to include digital drawings and edited photography. I'm also exploring the mythological aspects of Cyprus alongside its landscapes and ruins, depicting abstract motifs while working directly from still moment photography snapshots from home. Currently, I'm working on my fourth Oil Stick and Collage on canvas large-scale piece in this series, with plans to create many more additions. Scale is crucial to my artistic process, as I aim to create an immersive experience for viewers, transporting them into my world and experience.
